Essential 1 Confidence

The 12 Essentials for Successful Speaking

Have you ever heard a presentation or a speech and later realized how you got attracted to the speaker? (Not that kind of attraction you may be or might be thinking). I mean that you felt in someway connected and elevated and risen from your present level of spirits and moved with him while you were listening through his presentation or speech. You went home feeling happier and worthwhile. The speaker was so eloquent, fluid and easy that you were touched in some way. Even if the presentation was about selling bananas!

That quality you experienced and internalized is called charisma. The dictionary defines charisma as “A rare personal quality attributed to leaders who arouse fervent popular devotion and enthusiasm” and further elaborates “the quality or power of an individual to attract, influence, or inspire people.” A charismatic speaker leaves an impression on the audience, large or small, that makes them want to come back for more and more. It’s just what you want if you are trying to sell or influence a customer. Charisma is not just for selling but can be used for and in just about any field or profession; some of the best university and college professors are often charismatic speakers as well.

We often associate charisma with preachers, like Mahatma Gandhi, or old-time politicians, such as Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. If you ask yourself; is it possible for me to become a charismatic speaker? The answer is a definite, yes! By breaking down charisma into its 12 individual essentials (elaborated for you here in no particular order), you can attain each essential with a little time and practice.

Speaking is a quality and requires a certain amount of élan and finesse while executing it, remember the essentials you are about to read ahead and incorporate them in your daily speaking schedules and see how your life changes to becoming a speaker with purpose and success.

Essential 1
Confidence

Great speakers don’t appear nervous or ill at ease and are Self-confident and Self-assured.

There are two ways to look at it, and approach this essential; with an external perspective or from the outside and with an internal perspective or from the inside. From the outside, you can gain self-confidence by gaining more experience speaking. Joining Success College for example is a good way to build on the speaking experience you gain in your regular employment. In addition, practice each presentation or speech you are about to give or present many times over, until you know it cold and like the back of your hands. You won’t be as nervous if you are well prepared. Remember you don’t want to fumble or that will only send a negative signal; that you do not know what you’ve set out for.

And as much as possible; get to know your customer, client and or audience in advance, as people. This is definitely something you’ve definitely got if you’ve joined a sales oriented organization like a bank or an insurance company a form which read ‘Know Your Customer’. Why? Why do organizations stress that you must know your customer, your client or your audience. Because, if you don’t know them; they don’t you. Isn’t that a simple equation? Even if you greet them at the door or start a small meeting with a few pleasantries, you will find yourself feeling more comfortable as you move along to before making a presentation of what you want to say and what you want to achieve from what you are about to say. Knowing builds confidence and confidence makes for a great speech.

From the inside; now there are many ways to do this and there are a number of techniques to lessen nervousness and anxiety. I recommend Self Introspection as a well proven way and some forms of meditation techniques. To a large extent they have a great scientific influence and are widely known and verified to be a great stress and nerve reducer, which will help you in your other activities as well. If these techniques are not immediately possible for you. Then, at least close your eyes to relax and center yourself within yourself for a few minutes before the presentation. Think of what you are about to do and what you are about to speak. Remember speaking is not an activity; it is a quality and you must get into yourself and give yourself that time and space to present yourself to achieve the desired results you’ve been wanting to see come by for you. Drink a glass of water or a cup of tea. A few stretches can also help reduce tension. Stretch your mouth, too! Cause you are just about to speak to succeed.

Public speaking is the second most fear after the fear of snakes and before the fear of dying. So you see; speaking is more fearful than dying. Now, wouldn’t it be better to speak than to die. It is not something that you may be isolated with and you might think that because you feel you have the fear to speak, you are in the minority. But you aren’t, there are and were many great speakers who never spoke till they first went up on stage and gave their first ever speech. Some cried, some fainted, and some even froze. (Not literally) But that was only their perceived fear.

Unshakable confidence is the sense of certainty we all want in life. The only way you can consistently experience confidence, even in environments and situations you’ve never previously encountered, is through the power of self faith. It is the corner stone of your public speaking foundation. Imagine and feel certain about the emotions you deserve to have now, rather than wait for them to spontaneously appear someday in the far future. When you’re confident, you’re willing to experiment, be not shaken by mistakes and be strong enough to  stand up and start all over again and push yourself till it is a part of you every moment; every second of your life.

Truly confident people:

Are positive thinkers (Mental)
Feel great about themselves (Emotional)
Are results oriented (Behavioral)
Surround themselves with supportive people (Relational)
Have a focused purpose and mission (Spiritual)

Self-confidence is a tremendous jet engine and sense of direction inside you that overcomes all kinds of barriers to success that would otherwise end your dream of being that professional public speaker you want to be.

Remember: Fear is only that momentary flush of confidence turned upside down. You need to take control and reverse the state of yourself.
