Essential 6 Fluidity

Essential 6
Fluidity

Fluidity is spontaneity without stumbling, using full sentences and correct grammar, and without fillers.

Imagine you’re up in the morning and you’ve just turned on your water supply and you see that initial hiccough before the water flow becomes fluid and consistent. It jerks, chokes, spurts and makes a hissing sound before it becomes fluid. Now if this is how you are at a function or an occasion. You are going to get the people going. Ah! Ooh! Eh! Hmm! It is not going to go down too well of your ability to speak successfully. It will lack the quality you need to drive yourself to sell your idea or your point of view. You want to start and keep it like the flow of oil. It is smooth, timed and substantial. It has weight and it moves consistently and fluidly as you desire it to.

Fluidity requires practice; and bear in mind the old saying that goes ‘practice makes perfect’. This is going to yield you results, there is no short cut to practice, ask anyone who is at a competitive level. I personally have gone through this routine over and over again and most of what I write here is my life’s experience with learning how to speak charismatically. However the twist to this is, practicing the wrong technique or procedure over and over again repeatedly will surely make you perfect too. And to this effect you will unwittingly perfect incorrect techniques and procedures. This is something you don’t want to be convicted about and be deeply passionate about; as you might look stupid at times when you’re inconsistent grammatically and verbally. Pronunciation is also a key component in speaking fluidly.

It is important to understand that fluidity comes with not only being able to speak the language but also being able to understand; having a far reaching authority over subjects and topics which help in making your spontaneity fluid and widely acceptable. When you speak it should sound like (beautiful) music to the listener. Those great speakers who you admire haven’t suddenly become great speakers or were gifted a magic wand and started speaking. No it is a deliberate effort they’ve put in for hours and days and months and sometimes years over to perfect the skill of speaking.  You cannot become a Sachin Tenduldar in the stadium before hitting hundreds and thousands of balls at the practice nets. We must understand we all have varying learning curves and it could take some a shorter time and could take some a longer time. But the end result ‘Perfect fluidity’ is what we are in pursuit of.

In other words, great speakers practice their strokes over and over again till they reach a point of mastery. You can become a good speaker too, and so can anyone with the desire to be one. It takes that little understanding of making practice a habit. Joining Success College, as mentioned earlier, is one way to start. One of the best techniques is to record yourself as you practice. Run through your entire speech. If you can videotape yourself, great, but even a simple tape recorder is a great help. Now, sit back and listen to yourself several times over. Take notes as you go. I guarantee that you’ll find plenty to correct. So go back and work on your delivery and try again. With practice, your speaking will become smooth and fluid. With practice you will speak to succeed.

Remember: You wouldn't have been reading this book if you were convinced you were already a master speaker, it only tells you; you need to start practicing.
